Inspired by a motorway bridge?

The Surrey County Council in-house design for the New Walton Bridge bears a striking resemblance to a bridge over the M42 motorway (see below).  

Many Surrey residents feel that Walton Bridge deserves something better.  The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) seems to agree.  CABE wrote to SCC saying "the project is not one we can support in its current form" ... "We feel that this site [Walton Bridge] is important and prominent enough to demand a higher standard of design"
